Choose a Compatible Brick Before the Stockpile Disappears

Count scarce historic brick, compare reclaimed, blend-matched new and tumbled options, then approve a durable wall or paving repair by test panel.

When historic brick supply runs out, count and reserve the sound originals, then match the wall’s dimensions, color blend, texture and physical behavior—not an imagined version of age. Reclaimed brick is strongest where verified stock provides genuine period character; blend-matched new brick offers better quantity and production control; tumbled brick is only a trial treatment for otherwise compatible new units. Approve the choice in a representative panel with the proposed mortar before ordering the full quantity.

Count the Stock Before Looking for a Substitute

Permanent supply loss is a procurement risk, not a temporary inconvenience. Aspen counted 16,000 salvaged bricks remaining for its historic pedestrian malls on April 8, 2026, and described the shortage as critical. Officials considered reserving original units for the area around the Wheeler Opera House while using a modern color blend in another project area, according to the Aspen Times.

In May 2026, Michelmersh Brick Holdings’ Charnwood plant in Leicestershire, associated with handmade red-brick production dating to 1887, was reported as due to close by the end of that month, according to Leicestershire Live. A product from a closed plant should not be assumed to return.

Inventory every original unit already under project control: loose yard stock, earlier salvage, units recoverable from approved alterations and previously rejected material worth reassessing. Do not remove brick from intact or concealed historic work without confirming that the intervention will not sacrifice significant fabric or disturb structural masonry.

A pallet count alone is inadequate. Sort the stock by dimensions, color group, type and condition. Separate apparently sound units from cracked, spalled, flaking, salt-contaminated, distorted or badly chipped brick. Cleaning trials may reduce the usable total further.

Calculate demand by repair zone and include losses from removal, cleaning, rejection, cutting and installation. There is no universal loss percentage in the available evidence. Set the allowance after inspecting the stock and considering the proposed work.

Reserve additional sound units for future maintenance where feasible. A repair that consumes every original brick leaves the next intervention with no reference stock.

Put the Best Originals Where the Match Matters Most

Rank repair areas by historical significance, public visibility, exposure, construction role, future access and the quality of available substitutes. Principal entrances, prominent elevations and significant details generally warrant the closest material. A compatible alternative may be acceptable in a secondary or clearly defined zone.

Aspen’s paving plan demonstrates the value of coherent allocation. The city sought to avoid distributing visibly different units as scattered patches across the malls. Reserving originals for one priority area and using a modern blend across another could make the material change read as a deliberate phase rather than random spotting.

That paving case is not a technical specification for a facade, chimney, parapet, arch or load-bearing wall. Those locations raise different questions about saturation, frost, salts, bearing, anchorage and mortar interaction. Structural, severely exposed or protected masonry needs project-specific professional review.

Match the Existing Range, Not One Brick

An exact match is realistic only when verified original or genuinely equivalent material exists in sufficient quantity and condition. Even then, different mortar, workmanship and weathering can keep a repair from disappearing visually.

A compatible blend is usually the defensible target when the original product is gone. It should sit within the existing masonry’s range without pretending that newly manufactured units have acquired decades of exposure.

Survey the wall before asking suppliers for samples. Record:

  • Average length, width and height across multiple units
  • The observed dimensional range and course height
  • Headers and stretchers where both are accessible
  • Joint width, profile and tooling
  • Face texture, inclusions, drag marks and firing effects
  • Edge sharpness, wear and distortion
  • Each component color and its approximate proportion
  • Bond, orientation, special shapes and construction phases
  • Exposure, deterioration and intended use of the replacement

Specialist brick-matching guidance recommends measuring multiple bricks rather than relying on one apparently regular unit. It also identifies dimensions, shape, brick type, texture, absorption, salts and frost exposure as relevant to assessment (Building Conservation).

Send a supplier three baseline photographs: a close view of the face and edges, a wider view showing bond and color distribution, and a measured view with a legible scale. Use neutral daylight where possible and state whether the wall was dry, damp or recently washed.

Multicolor masonry needs a blend specification. A substitute can contain the correct colors yet fail because their proportions are wrong or the mason lays them in clusters. Record the intended distribution and require mixing across the work rather than consuming one cube or color component at a time.

The survey should also distinguish weathering and patina from the brick’s underlying production character. Staining, biological growth, deposits and worn edges may contribute to the present appearance, but reproducing them artificially is not the same as matching the material.

Reclaimed Brick Works Only When the Lot Can Be Verified

Reclaimed brick offers the best chance of genuine patina, softened edges and period irregularity. Those qualities do not establish durability or compatibility.

Research the original manufacturer, plant, region and period, then inspect more than a few hand-selected samples from any candidate lot. Check for cracks, suspected hidden fractures, frost damage, spalling, flaking, salts, warping, severe chips, contamination, hard mortar residue and mixed brick types.

Provenance narrows the search but does not guarantee equivalence. A reclaimed unit’s earlier performance in a sheltered wall does not prove that it belongs in a saturated parapet, chimney or paving field. Where the proposed work is load-bearing or severely exposed, incomplete records may require testing or engineering review.

Approve a cleaning trial before calculating usable yield. Cleaning can reveal fractures, damage faces or leave units that do not meet the required dimensions and condition. The purchase quantity and the usable quantity are therefore not necessarily the same.

Reclaimed brick is the strongest route when enough sound units can be inspected, sorted and allocated to an exposure comparable to their previous use. It is a weak choice when the lot is mixed, undocumented or too small to maintain a coherent blend.

Blend-Matched New Brick Provides Better Supply Control

New brick usually provides more predictable quantities, dimensions, batch information and technical documentation. Its visual weakness is often excessive uniformity: sharp arrises, repeated texture or a narrow color range can stand apart from handmade or weathered masonry.

Compare complete current-production units, not product names, website photographs or small chips. A familiar manufacturer or historic product name is not proof of equivalence because clay sources, plants, moulds, machinery and firing conditions can change.

Specify the blend by component colors and proportions. Confirm whether the supplier will premix it, deliver separate components or expect the mason to blend during laying. Retain labeled samples of every approved component.

Custom production may be justified where standard lines cannot provide the dimensions, profiles, special shapes, surface character or controlled tonal range. It can improve control but cannot reproduce an extinct clay body, kiln or authentic weathering. Sampling, tooling, production and delivery must be allowed for in the project schedule.

No reliable universal price or lead-time comparison is available. Reclaimed costs depend on scarcity, sorting, cleaning, testing and freight; new and custom costs depend on quantity, production arrangements, shapes and delivery. Obtain project-specific quotations after the required performance and approval process are defined.

Tumbling Can Soften Edges but Cannot Manufacture Age

Tumbling is a treatment applied to a candidate brick, not a substitute for matching its dimensions, color range, texture and performance. It may soften sharp edges or reduce an overly new appearance, but it does not create genuine patina or known service history.

Processing can also reduce usable yield or damage faces and arrises. In Aspen’s paving project, officials reported material loss associated with double tumbling and questioned its value for that application. No universal loss figure was reported, so the effect must be established through a representative trial.

Compare untreated and treated samples. Record the number rejected after processing, inspect face and edge damage, and review any available change in relevant material properties. Do not use tumbling, sandblasting, acid washing or tinting to rescue a brick that is dimensionally or technically unsuitable.

Stain or tint can sometimes adjust an otherwise acceptable near match. Test it on representative units and inspect the result in relevant light and moisture conditions. It cannot correct poor condition, unsuitable absorption, inadequate exposure performance or structural concerns.

Check Physical Compatibility Separately From Color

Aesthetic approval and technical approval are different decisions. A convincing color match can still move moisture poorly, fail in the exposure or place damaging stress on adjacent historic masonry.

Review dimensions, intended use, water absorption, freeze-thaw exposure, soluble-salt information, existing condition, strength where structurally relevant and compatibility with the proposed mortar. Water absorption need not be identical, but a substantial difference can change where rain and stored moisture travel. Conservation guidance recommends broadly aligning absorption rather than treating appearance as sufficient (Building Conservation).

Assess the actual location. A sheltered elevation does not experience the same conditions as a coping, chimney, garden wall, below-grade area or wind-driven-rain facade. Test classifications also belong to particular standards and jurisdictions; they should not be copied into an unrelated specification without translating the project’s exposure and performance needs.

Request current product data, plant and batch information, declared test results, reclaimed provenance, condition surveys and any laboratory reports. If records are absent and the work is structural, severely exposed, significant or already failing, seek appropriate conservation, laboratory or engineering advice.

Mortar Can Make or Break the Match

Before replacing brick or repointing, correct active causes of deterioration such as failed flashings, leaking gutters, open copings, poor drainage, plumbing leaks, settlement or persistent saturation. Otherwise the replacement may enter the same failure cycle.

Use sound historic mortar, preferably from a protected depth within the joint, as the visual reference. Match its sand color and particle character, texture, joint width, profile, tooling and relationship to the brick face. A changed joint can make a reasonable brick blend appear conspicuous.

Compatibility takes priority over maximum strength. The National Park Service explains that overly strong mortar can transfer stresses into masonry units, while dense mortar can impede moisture migration and contribute to cracking, spalling, salt-related deterioration or surface loss. Preservation Brief 2 also emphasizes matching mortar color, texture, tooling, joint type, profile and sand characteristics.

Do not infer an exact binder recipe from surface color alone. Documentary research, experienced assessment or laboratory analysis may be warranted for significant work. The aim is an appropriately soft, vapor-permeable and visually compatible mortar, not a color match achieved with a mix that is too hard or dense.

Approve the Wall, Not a Loose Sample

Obtain enough full units to show each candidate’s actual variation. Compare them with several representative historic bricks rather than one unusually dark, pale, smooth or weathered example.

Build a test panel or trial repair using the proposed brick, blend proportions, bond, orientation, mortar, joint width, tooling, cleaning method and relevant special shapes. A loose arrangement cannot demonstrate coursing, mortar effects, workmanship or blend distribution.

Review the panel close up and from normal viewing distances. Check course alignment, unit dimensions, texture, edge character, tonal balance, repetition, mortar particles, joint shadow and the relationship to adjoining weathered work. Identify who has approval authority before procurement.

Retain labeled control bricks, blend instructions, mortar samples, photographs, test results and approval notes. Compare deliveries with those controls before widespread installation, and quarantine questionable material rather than building it into the wall.

Record the supplier, provenance, product, plant, batch, dimensions, treatments, installed locations and remaining stock in a permanent brick register. The successful match is the documented combination of compatible brick, mortar, blend and placement—not the nearest red or brown unit in a catalog.
